If I were riding on a bus in New York City right now 😳 and Taylor Swift got on and sat down next to me, I doubt I would recognize her. That’s how little I know about her or have been aware of her. I know enough to know she’s an accomplished entertainer, of course, but I can’t tell you a single song she sings. What I can tell you is that everyone is talking about her personal relationship and her political influence, and I don’t get why.
Swift is dating a football superstar of our beloved Kansas City Chiefs. Travis Kelce hooked up with Swift, and, for some reason, folks just lost it. Their relationship is—what?—several months old now, and people are still outraged by it, accusing her of ruining the NFL, complaining that she’ll be the center of attention at Super Bowl LVIII, which will be played in Las Vegas on Sunday between the Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. Somehow seeing her in the stands at the various games or the camera panning over to her on television has caused people to cringe.

Furthermore, conservatives are abuzz about Swift possibly weighing in on the 2024 presidential election, and President Biden reportedly would like her endorsement. Some folks are angrily saying she needs to stay her little self out of politics. Others believe that if Republicans continue to attack her, former President Donald Trump, who almost assuredly will be the GOP nominee, will pay the price, as it would alienate “young voters and women.”
As the Hill reported, “The pivotal role young voters are expected to play in November was underscored this week when the Times reported that Biden allies were hoping to clinch Swift’s endorsement.” If she did issue an endorsement, it would not be the first time she waded into politics. In the 2018 midterms, the musician endorsed Democrats. In 2020, she supported the Biden-Harris ticket; perhaps she’ll do it again. Trump’s supporters are scared, it seems, and Biden’s backers are hopeful.
So if people aren’t talking about Swift and whom she chooses to kiss under the post-game stadium lights (and being angry with him, by the way), they’re talking about the role she could play politically—and they’re truly concerned about both of those things. Here’s my question, and it’s a simple one: “Wat?!” Again, I admit I’m not a member of Planet Taylor Swift—at all. I mean, even the term Swifty Swiftie is new to me. (I didn’t even know how to spell it!) But the fact that commentators, pundits, and even a president are talking about a singer, her boyfriend, and her political opinion is mindboggling to me—and, honestly, a tad ridiculous.
But the late Andrew Breitbart did say that “politics is downstream from culture.” Maybe this is that in 3D. Nonetheless, this Swift anger-obsession-dependence syndrome still seems a whole lot of odd to me.

The obsession is odd to me too. Like you, I can’t name a Taylor Swift song, and don’t think I’ve ever listened to her music. I don’t understand why folks are making such a big deal. As a Conservative, I’m actually quite embarrassed by all the brouhaha. She doesn’t bother me, and she has the right to watch her boyfriend hopefully win his third Super Bowl.
To be honest with you, I don’t think Taylor Swift political views mean anything to me. She has no idea what life is really about. She’s just a spoiled little rich girl who’s opinion I could care less about
