Listen now | ***WARNING: This is NOT an episode children should watch or hear.*** As a follow-up to a recent visit to an area library to discuss Gender Queer, a sexually explicit young adult graphic novel, I returned to discuss its policy about pornographic material as it pertains to children. Gender Queer has, for at least a couple of years, topped the list of most challenged books. The memoir's content includes images of children engaging in sexual activity, including oral sex and masturbation. This is obviously inappropriate for minors—and adults shouldn't be gawking at images of children having sex, either. In a culture that is normalizing the sexualization and exploitation of children, we have to push back. In this episode, you get to hear my conversation with two librarians. Furthermore, in addition to Gender Queer, I've learned that another young adult novel called This Book Is Gay is in this library, and it's arguably worse. It doesn't just give specific details about homosexual sex; it goes so far as to give children the steps to access sex apps so they can then meet up with strangers who share their sexual preferences. This is dangerous, and shouldn't it be illegal?
