I voted for former President Donald Trump twice, am well aware that he did a phenomenal job as president, and have spoken well of him often. I have also criticized him when I felt he deserved it. His recent comments about abortion deserve it, and I do not support anyone to the point of betraying my own values.

On Meet the Press Sunday, Trump handled questions about abortion in a way that both surprised and bothered me. When questioned about a 15-week ban on abortion, he said, “You’re gonna come up with a number of weeks or months. You’re going to come up with a number that’s going to make people happy.” He went on to say he would “sit down with both sides … and negotiate something”—concerning the “number” and concerning his approval of a federal ban.
“I’m going to come together with all groups, and we’re going to have something that’s acceptable,” the former president said. Acceptable? The only acceptable thing about abortion is to stand against it. That’s what a pro-life person should say because that’s what pro-life leadership works towards.

Yes, I am well aware that Roe v. Wade was overturned because Trump did what he said he would do—nominate pro-life justices to the U.S. Supreme Court. We have him to thank for this monumental step in the right direction, returning abortion to the states. Notice I said this is a step in the right direction. It is not the perfect culmination of a battle being fought since the horror of abortion became a made-up thing in the Constitution. Abortion should no more be a state decision as murder should be—because that’s what it is. The lovers of “What does the science say?” should agree with this simple fact. Nonetheless, the Supreme Court did the right thing in their ruling, taking us closer to doing the perfect thing—which is protecting the most vulnerable among us, innocent unborn life, as well as life after birth because some Democrats have made clear that they are fine with killing a baby even after birth.
Besides Trump’s weak abortion answer on how many weeks/federal or state issue, he is receiving deserved pushback from his political opponents and pro-life groups for thumbing his nose at Florida’s six-week heartbeat bill, saying the actions of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, also running for president, “is a terrible thing, a terrible mistake.”
How in the world does someone who claims to stand for life call someone’s decision to save life “terrible” and a “mistake”? This is the problem when people become politicians. Which Trump is the real one? He says he’s pro-life. He has seemed to walk the walk, and I have believed him, but he still speaks of babies as negotiable, as a football to be kicked around.
When will we get it? Where are the people who will say even if it costs me everything, I will not compromise on this issue? That’s rare in politics, I know. Trump may have just been saying what he felt needed to be said because this is politics, right? And perhaps that’s why I can’t do the politics as usual thing. If DeSantis is “terrible” for pushing a six-week ban, he’s not terrible enough because it should be banned period! If this makes him “DeSanctus” or “DeSanctimonious,” as Trump calls him, then I’d wear that as a badge of honor if I were the Florida governor. But even the six weeks are not enough.
And I have to add, the notable Trump supporters who have a platform and even his ear ought to be making a stink about this or advising him or whatever. In this race so far, he has been my guy. As people who pay attention know, I will herald Trump when he does right, but on an issue like this, I have to criticize as well. Anything less, I feel, is dangerous and hypocritical, and I hope voices he’s likely to hear— those he respects—will share with him where he has made a “terrible mistake” in his comments, if not in his thinking. I’d love to see him backtrack on this. I know that’s not popular because, you know, who wants to give credit to a political opponent? Again, some things are bigger than taking it to political opponents. As ironic as it sounds, little babies are bigger than politics.

Update: An earlier version of this article referred to Florida’s ban as five weeks. It’s been corrected to reflect that it’s six weeks.
Don’t keep this to yourself…
