Tension Fills the Room at Jimmy Carter's Funeral—Except Between Trump and Obama
President Jimmy Carter’s funeral, a solemn occasion, was rife with tension as every living former president attended and sat so close they could smell one another’s breath. Not long into it, however, former President Barack Obama and President-elect Donald Trump seemed to be quite comfortable—bosom buddies they were, despite the latter being denigrated as a modern-day Hitler since his first run for the presidency.
I was surprised to see them ignoring one another. Former Vice President Mike Pence tried his best to be cordial, but his wife would have none of it. The Bushes were ready to welcome the Clintons, who ignored the Bushes, so George W. chose to sit down because, well, what else was there for him to do? Meanwhile, though Obama didn’t shake Trump’s hand upon entering, after he sat down, Trump spoke to him, and the two of them spent a good deal of time thereafter not only talking, but laughing heartily. Vice President Kamala Harris looked back at the two pals, then turned back around and sighed, as her husband, first gentleman Doug Emhoff, sat quietly, as former first lady Melania Trump was doing. President Joe Biden appeared to be taking a nap and missing most of it.
