Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), 81 years old, froze at the podium on Wednesday and remained frozen for 30-plus seconds. He experienced something similar in late July. Clearly, something is off, and I hope that those closest to him—colleagues and family—are telling him it’s time to step aside. The doctor, however, cleared him to continue his work schedule.
Here is the video of what transpired:
Does this look like someone who is ready to continue his schedule as if this did not happen—for the second time? Watching this truly makes me sad. I’ve been hard on McConnell, I’ve not been a fan, and I especially do not appreciate his establishment ways and what that cost conservatives in the midterm elections, but as I’ve said about President Joe Biden and his obvious cognitive issues, some things are bigger than politics. So each time I saw McConnell standing there—just frozen—my heart hurt. He looked so vulnerable and so lost.
But I don’t just feel sad. I feel angry that people would rather prop him up, tell him what to say, pretend everything is okay if that means not relinquishing any political power.
