June 14 is Flag Day here in the United States. The flag, of course, is a symbol of the freedom that this country represents. Let us never forget that we are blessed to be Americans and people have fought and died to secure those freedoms we enjoy today. My prayer, honestly, is that we will continue to honor our flag and maintain our identity because, not to be a Debbie Downer on a day like today, those things are in jeopardy.
As we watch this administration and those who supposedly serve in our political process make a mockery of who we are and put our flag on the same level as other emblems of whatever particular ideology people may embrace, we start to wonder where it all leads. I pray we will not get out of bed one day and find that the U.S. flag is no longer any more special than any other nation’s flag or a random organization’s flag or, God forbid, we have no flag at all.
Before you dismiss this as nonsense, think about how far we have come in a short amount of time. People waved things off as conspiracy theories, fear tactics, and sheer ridiculousness that are now just life in America. We have well-educated elected and appointed leaders who cannot define what a woman is anymore, so how far away are we from no longer being able to define what an American is and, therefore, what our flag is? How long before we hear, upon its mention, “Mom, what’s an American flag?”
To use a churchy expression, I’m not speaking this into existence; I’m saying we’d better wake up. I’m saying it’s more important than ever that we remember who we are, what we stand for, and how precious our American flag is because there really is a desire to wipe all of that out, and, disturbingly, that movement exists on the inside, not just the outside. And the culprits dress in suits and ties, skirts and shoes, and go to work in many of the agencies we consider staples of American honor. Don’t be asleep.
Happy Flag Day.
