We know Kari Lake as a current candidate for the U.S. Senate; a former Arizona gubernatorial candidate (2022); and, some believe, a possible future vice presidential running mate for former President Donald Trump. To add to that, she owned media headlines last week after she released a nearly year-old audio of a conversation with the chair of the Arizona Republican Party, who was allegedly attempting to bribe her to stay out of the Senate race. To say some Republicans, particularly MAGA Republicans, are outraged is an understatement, but I see things a little differently, and I have a few questions about Ms. Lake’s story, which doesn’t quite add up for me.

When the story surfaced, I caught just a little of the buzz—the accusation of Jeff DeWit’s bribery attempt, followed by his resignation as chair. However, it was not until Lake appeared on The Megyn Kelly Show last Thursday that I leaned into the details. Kelly played some of the audio, and she and Lake dug into what everyone had been talking about.

Now, I would be surprised if many who read my Substack aren’t fond of Lake. She quickly made a name for herself in politics, and on the campaign trail in 2022, was lauded for her ability to take on the media. Of course, her background in media, no doubt, played a role in her ability to think on her feet. Despite the fan base she has garnered, I have to call it as I see it, and I do have some questions about what took place when DeWit came to her house and she surreptitiously hit the play button.
