I returned from vacation about a week ago, and I am more adamant than ever that without a sharp cultural reshift involving young people, the nation is in trouble.
The hotel we stayed at the longest had some young folks on staff. It took no time to discover that customer service wasn’t a priority—like as soon as we walked into the hotel. An unreturned smile is often a telltale sign of what you’re about to deal with.
Before the stay was over, we had a young man who didn’t appreciate being asked a question about the service and decided to stare me down, my response being, “I don’t appreciate the staredown. It’s totally unnecessary.” His response was an apology he clearly didn’t mean because right after, he continued his defensiveness, and a moment later, when asked for a plastic bag so we could dump the garbage bin that the housekeepers hadn’t emptied in two days, he stared and then ripped the perforated bag apart in an aggressive manner as if furious. Throughout the five nights there, he struck me as someone who could not only be rude, but dangerous.
