New Mexico’s Democrat governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham, has ordered a 30-day suspension on open and concealed carry in Albuquerque, effective September 8. This begs two questions: 1) When did we get to the place where people think they are bigger than the Constitution? and 2) What are we going to do about it?
The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution is still a thing in this country, but some seem to have forgotten this simple truth. A governor does not get to decide that she can infringe on people’s rights. It doesn’t work that way in this country; at least, it’s not supposed to. However, it will work this way if people don’t push back. It’s the same story that we are seeing with the weaponization of our federal agencies—rogue people doing whatever they want to do…and people complying.
Pushback is occurring in Albuquerque, however. Some members of law enforcement have expressed their reservations about this order, such as Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen, who said he will abide by it but issued a statement, saying, “While I understand and appreciate the urgency, the temporary ban challenges the foundation of our constitution, which I swore an oath to uphold.” He continued, “I am wary of placing my deputies in positions that could lead to civil liability conflicts, as well as the potential risks posed by prohibiting law-abiding citizens from their constitutional right to self-defense.”
The urgency he spoke of involves recent shooting deaths, including the deaths of a five-year-old girl asleep in her mobile home, an 11-year-old boy, and a 14-year-old girl, to name a few. The suspension has come as a result of what Lujan Grisham has labeled an emergency public health order, and the penalty for violating it is a fine of up to $5,000, in addition to civil penalties.
Albuquerque police chief Harold Medina flat-out said he will not enforce the order. Other officers are reportedly concerned, as well.
Regarding the Second Amendment, the governor stated that “no constitutional right … is intended to be absolute.”
Let me be clear: It is heart-rending when any innocent person is killed. It is incredibly sad when people die at the hands of others. We should be concerned about the escalation of violence, particularly in Democrat-run, gun-controlled cities. The answer, however, is not to violate everyone’s rights. Enough is enough with so-called leaders doing whatever they want all willy-nilly. This cannot continue.
Furthermore, how does taking away the rights of law-abiding citizens—with murderers on the loose—combat crime? If anyone should know this makes zero sense, it should be Sheriff Allen, who has reservations but plans to go along with the overreach of power anyway, despite the oath he took. And this is why we have been in dangerous territory for some time now. Those who know better don’t do better. Instead, they just go along with any and everything someone decides to implement, regardless of the law.
Gun-control pushers, please start acknowledging and exercising common sense. Do you really think that a criminal intent on killing folks would have a conversation like this with his partner in crime?
One criminal: Let’s go out tonight and pick off a few people over on the boulevard.
Another criminal: Can’t tonight. We gotta wait until the 30 days are up. We’re not allowed to carry our guns, remember?
Sounds ridiculous, right? That’s because it is. Criminals don’t obey the law. Law-abiding citizens typically do, which means that if they comply with this suspension, they will be unarmed and, therefore, cannot defend themselves and their families if criminals who, by the way, also know that people are likely to comply and will not be armed for defense, go after them. You have to wonder how these so-called leaders ever got where they are in life. And you certainly have to wonder why people put up with the nonsense and the disregard for their rights. As my colleague often says, though, “People get what they vote for.”
No one has the authority to violate the rights of the people on demand. Liberty is a fragile thing, and we are living out the erosion of it—from what is happening with our [In]Justice Department, the IRS, the FBI, health officials, and even some random governor from New Mexico.
America did not come easy. She was birthed at great cost. I have a feeling it’s not going to be easy to maintain her. God help us as we help ourselves. I’ll just leave it at that.
The uneducated response has been "look what they did to use with the "Tuskegee Experiment." Yet you lined up to get the shot and got 3 booster shots, and still wear the mask. I know when the fear mongering started, the MSM pushed how COVID got more blacks. I've had discussions with people concerning this but I want to ask those who are still wearing a mask. What prevents me is I don't want someone asking me why I'm not wearing a mask since I believe it's my right to make that decision. With all the information out showing mask don't work, I don't understand why people continue to hang on to them. Could it be they feel safe, knowing that people will see they easily comply therefore they won't be harassed? I have seen what I consider an uptick in everyone masking up. Full disclosure I did get the single COVID shot because we wanted to go overseas to see our grandkids. I regret doing that. I was a pretty good long distance runner( 5k, 10 milers,1/2 marathons) before the shot, I'm just now getting back to being able to run a mile.... barely.
Sad observation is it seems black people are quick to comply. Many are still wearing mask and have been since 2020. I showed up to the office yesterday and a temp receptionist was wearing a mask. She is a black woman. I'm not sure how you comply when someone says when you enter the restaurant you must be wearing your mask but you can take it off when you get to your table. How does that make any sense? You asked a great question when you asked what will the resistance look like. Hopefully NM provides the blueprint Americans need to grow the resistance to this tyrannical government.
