Democrats in California blocked a bill that would put child trafficking in the “serious felony” category. Senate Bill 14, introduced by Republican Sen. Shannon Grove, unanimously passed the Senate earlier this year, but when it came before the Assembly on Tuesday, every single Democrat on the Assembly Public Safety Committee voted against it.
The text of the bill points out that “this bill would include human trafficking of a minor within the definition of a serious felony for all purposes, including for purposes of the Three Strikes Law.” This means that along with other serious crimes, such as rape, murder, and arson, child trafficking would also qualify as causing repeat offenders to face 25 years to life in prison.
SB 14 also states:
Section 1.
The Legislature finds and declares all of the following:
(a) California consistently ranks number one in the nation in the number of human trafficking cases reported to the National Human Trafficking Hotline.
(b) The Attorney General notes that California is one of the largest sites for human trafficking in the United States and recognizes the serious nature of this crime.
Despite the obvious seriousness of this crime and the urgency to put a stop to it, every Democrat—on the safety committee, mind you—blocked it. After a battle that included public pressure and Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom—typically soft on crime—getting involved, the Democrats reversed course, as four of the six Democrats changed their minds.
It is beyond comprehension that anyone would block a bill to protect children. Meanwhile, whenever one points out the target that children are, some people cry “conspiracy theory.” It’s not a conspiracy when we can see the agenda right in front of us.
According to Capital Public Radio, Grove said, “This is a very measured, very narrow bill,” adding, “It only addresses those that traffic and sell our children for sex.”
James Gallagher, the Assembly Republican Leader said, “It should not be this hard to pass good, common-sense policy that protects our children.”
Right. It should not. It seems to be a rather simple approach to combatting the evil being heaped upon children. But, clearly, we no longer live in simple times.
People had better wake up.
You don't have to look to deep to figure out how they feel about this evil going on towards our children. They are looking at large millstones.
