Arizona 'Pro-Life' Lawmakers Cave to Culture of Death
No one expected pro-abortion politicians to be happy with the Arizona Supreme Court decision to uphold the state’s abortion ban. The fight was clearly going to be on. What people should be able to expect, however, is for people professing to be pro-life to stand by those principles and not cave, but even as there are incredible people who remain faithful to stand on principle, many others are compromising. We saw this recently with lawmakers in Arizona.
This cave started in the Arizona House of Representatives, as reporting by the Arizona Mirror states: “Republican Rep. Tim Dunn, R-Yuma, joined [Rep. Matt] Gress in bucking House Speaker Ben Toma and the rest of the GOP caucus, allowing the vote [to repeal the abortion ban] to occur.”
Prior to that betrayal, the attempt by Democrats to permit abortion was thwarted because Gress was the only Republican who voted to lift the ban. It appears Gress is up for reelection “in a swing district that has a history of punishing anti-abortion politicians.” He stood alone until Dunn got on the abortion band wagon, along with Rep. Justin Wilmeth, and the bill passed 32-28.
Next, it went to the Arizona Senate. Would professed pro-life Republicans stand up for the unborn there? Not Sens. Shawnna Bolick and T.J. Shope. They sided with the pro-abortion Democrats and the vote to repeal the 1864 ban to save innocent lives came out on top, passing 16-14.

Democrat Gov. Katie Hobbs wasted no time in signing the repeal into law while Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion groups, as well as about 30 Democrat lawmakers, stood beside her in celebration. Hobbs said, “Today we are doing what 23 governors and 55 legislatures refused to do, and I am so proud to be the ones that got this job done.”
This is what they call being “progressive”—being proud of paving the way for the shedding of innocent blood.
The entire process was a heated battle, and Republicans expressed their disappointment and disgust with lawmakers:
Sen. Anthony Kern, R-Glendale, said it was “insanity” that the duo claim to be pro-life while voting in a way that violates the core values of the Republican party and allows abortions to continue in Arizona. Repealing the 1864 law means that the 15-week law, which permits elective abortions up to its gestational deadline, will take effect instead.
“The craziest thing I’ve seen and heard is, ‘I’m pro-life, yet I’m going to vote to repeal the abortion ban.’ It’s insanity to me,” Kern said.
Reps. Rachel Jones and Alexander Klodin voiced their disgust:
“I am disgusted today,” said Rep. Rachel Jones, R-Tucson. “Life is one of the tenets of our Republican platform. To see people go back on that value is egregious to me.”
Rep. Alexander Kolodin, a Scottsdale Republican, blasted his colleagues and other Republicans who have said that failing to repeal the Civil War-era law will lead to GOP losses at the ballot this November — and could mean Democrats take control of the Legislature for the first time in decades.
“We’re willing to kill infants to win an election. Put in that context, it’s a little harder to stomach” Kolodin said. “Politics is important, but it’s not worth our souls.”
Kolodin’s thoughts speak to this truth: politics cannot save anyone’s soul. People who are politicians first will always cave when their power is threatened. It’s in Christ alone we must put our trust; He never caves.
It’s mind-boggling that these politicians believe that their decision to vote to repeal this ban is going to help put them in the good graces of leftist voters. It won’t. These Democrats taste blood.
How this all plays out is confusing, apparently even to Arizonans. It appears that it will take months for the repeal to kick in, at which time a 2022 law restricting abortion after 15 weeks will be in effect, and Democrats aren’t satisfied with that. This is what giving an inch does. These people are not content with what they consider minor victories, which is why caving to ravenous abortionists doesn’t help the cause. They are hell-bent on having a world where abortions are allowed on demand without restrictions. It’s utter ridiculousness for so-called pro-life individuals to think that by ceding ground the pro-abortion advocates will be satisfied. Instead, they push harder. Their aim is to enshrine abortion “rights” into the state Constitution via a ballot measure in November. No surprise there. Dogs that taste blood don’t generally back off. Same concept here.
